Founded in 2000 and led by Long Yu, the CHINA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA (CPO) has experienced exponential growth, becoming one of China’s top orchestras and a leading figure in Asia with an international reputation. The CPO was named one of the ten most inspiring orchestras in the world by Gramaphone in 2009. The CPO actively pursues innovative methods and platforms to promote classical music to a wider audience; in the last 16 years it has presented more than 3,000 compositions — many in their World and Chinese Premieres — in more than 1,000 performances before millions of audience members. The orchestra has traveled more than one million kilometers on its domestic and international tours, the equivalent of circling the world 20 times.
This will also be CPO’s first-ever performance in Singapore. Although they have never performed here, the orchestra does have strong links with Singapore in the classical music scene – Chen Yun, CPO’s Assistant Artistic Director was previously from the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO), while SSO’s Music Director Shui Lan has conducted the China Philharmonic Orchestra several times. One of Singapore’s most prolific young conductors, Wong Kah Chun also conducted the CPO in his first professional appearance in China. In addition, Singaporean maestro Choo Hoey, founder of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, will be collaborating with CPO for the first time in this 2017-2018 music season.
